Responsible for assisting in the inspection, maintenance, construction and testing of transmission and fiber optic lines and substations on electrical systems up to 230,000 volts.

Essential Job Tasks:

  • Use appropriate licenses, training certifications and basic skills to safely perform overhead and underground transmission line inspection (walk, climb, and helicopter) under direct supervision. Follow Santee Cooper transmission inspection guidelines to assess transmission line, fiber optic cable, right-of-way and substation integrity and determine maintenance requirements.

  • Follow Santee Cooper transmission operations guidelines to safely perform maintenance activities on overhead and underground de-energized transmission lines and substations under direct supervision. Possess appropriate skills, licenses and training certifications to climb wood and non-wood structures and operate specialized equip (see complete list below) to reach work heights in excess of 100 ft. during maintenance activities.

  • Follow Santee Cooper construction specifications to safely construct overhead and underground transmission lines and substations under direct supervision. Possess appropriate skills, licenses and training certifications to climb wood and non-wood structures and operate specialized equipment (see complete list below) to reach work heights in excess of 100 ft. during construction activities.

  • Provides stand-by, emergency response while OFF DUTY for the restoration of the transmission lines and substations during power outages under direct supervision.

  • Develop, demonstrate, and apply knowledge of the safety manual in all work performed. Actively participate in all safety meetings. Follow safe work methods and procedures to ensure safe job operations. Conduct job site safety briefings.

  • Attend and participate in all Santee Cooper apprenticeship and mandatory training requirements each year as determined by the task manual, management and OSHA.

  • Use communication skills to exchange information. Perform essential duties to support unit operations to include general housekeeping, maintenance of fleet and warehouse stock,  upkeep and maintenance of fleets, general care of tools and other duties as assigned.


  • Line Technicians are required to report to their designated crew quarters within 30 minutes when on call.



    Required qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED

  • Course work or knowledge of electricity

  • Passing Work Keys scores (3 or above) in Workplace Documents, Graphic Literacy and Workplace Observation

  • Valid driver’s license with good driving history

  • Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class A with fifth wheel endorsement or ability to obtain within six months of hire

  • Pole climbing proficiency within six months after employment

  • Excellent physical condition

  • Must maintain pole top rescue re-certification annually, therefore maximum body weight cannot exceed the equipment rating minus the weight of the associated work tools and equipment.

  • High school diploma or GED with two years experience required.

  • Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class A with fifth wheel endorsement required.


  • Line Technician A-Transmission
  • High school diploma or GED with five years experience required.

  • Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class A with fifth wheel endorsement required.


  • Preferred qualifications:
    •Experience operating construction equipment
    •Graduate of an Electrical Line Worker certificate program

    $18.90-$23.60 (min-mid)
    Line Technician B
    $23.25-$29.05 (min-mid)
    Line Technician A
    $31.80-$39.75 (min-mid)

    Physical Requirements and Activities:
    This position involves exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects (very heavy work). Must meet minimum visual requirements for mobile equipment operators
