  • Operates and maintains heavy equipment to manage vegetation on Santee Cooper's high voltage transmission system, along with other land management activities.


  • Essential Job Tasks:

  • Clears rights-of-way using various implementations including heavy type forestry machinery with rotating header attachments (brown cutter, mulching headers), light tractor equipment with attachments (bucket, rake, box blade, bush hog, hole diggers), ATV's and amphibious equipment.
  • Manual re-clearing is required using a chain saw and bush axe.
  • Foliar herbicide application which includes the use of portable spray units on trucks, tractors, and ATV's.
  • Applies granular herbicide by hand to structures as needed.
  • Operates service trucks equipped with fuel and oil dispensers, compressed air and spare parts to maintain R/W equipment.
  • Responsible for refueling and dispensing fluids on service support trucks and keeping accurate records.
  • Inspects/operates tractor trailer lowboy to transport equipment staying in compliance of State/ Federal transportation rules/regulations.
  • Performs repairs and/or maintenance on re-clearing equipment, transport equipment, and spray implementation equipment (ATV's/sprayers).
  • Performs "pre-trip" inspections while maintaining accurate records of all equipment maintenance.
  • Responsible for the upkeep of shared fleets and individual fleets assigned.
  • Acts as crew leader when crew is divided or when crew leader is absent, handles work fund money and receipts.
  • Records daily re-clearing progress information and combines it for weekly progress reports.
  • Responsible for recording items of interest for other departments concerning the Santee Cooper transmission system (danger trees/limbs, structural concerns on poles, encroachments, etc.).
  • Must have the ability to work independently inspecting, re-clearing, mulching, and applying herbicide.
  • Capable of making decisions concerning easement conditions to minimize any damages.
  • Works along side Crew Leaders and Supervision promoting public relations with land owners upholding Santee Cooper's image/integrity.
  • Documents inspections on assigned first aid kits and fire extinguishers located on various fleets.
  • Responsible for staying in compliance concerning individual mandated (Web) training.
  • Offers input to Supervision on ways to improve re-clearing operations/procedures.
  • Periodically requires out of town an overnight travel.

  • High School Diploma/GED with five years experience in similar utility re-clearing work. required.
  • A comparable combination of education and experience will be considered.
  • Heavy and light equipment experience required.
  • Commercial Class A Driver's License required.
  • Must have the ability to obtain a hazardous material endorsement within three months of employment.
  • If deemed necessary by Supervision must be able to obtain a Herbicide/Pesticide license within six months notice.

    Compensation Information
    Equipment Operator III
    $22.80-$28.45 (min.-mid.)

    Equipment Operator II:

  • High School Diploma/GED and a minimum of two years related experience required.
  • A comparable combination of education and experience will be considered.
  • Heavy and light equipment experience required.
  • Class A Driver's License and hazardous material endorsement within one year of hire.
  • If deemed necessary by Supervision must be able to obtain a Herbicide/Pesticide license within six months notice.

    $16.70-$20.85 (min.-mid.)
