Position Description:
The Nursing Professional Development Specialist (NPDS) Fellow practices within the professional practice model of his/her institution and exhibits Penn Medicine's core values in order to promote nurses' professional development in alignment with the organization's strategic plan.  Building a knowledge base in the nursing professional development specialty, the NPDS Fellow provides consultation in collaborative partnerships with various stakeholders to design, implement and evaluate educational programs that uphold practice standards, support evidence-based practice, and improve the delivery of high quality, comprehensive, individualized patient-and-family-centered care.  The NPDS Fellow builds leadership skill to identify the nursing staff's learning needs and respond to these educational needs while considering the effected patient populations, new clinical evidence, and organizational goals and changes both locally within the health system and nationally/globally. An NPDS Fellow communicates and negotiates multiple perspectives within his/her organization in a respectful and effective manner to achieve/advocate positive change and delivery of appropriate and ethical care. The goals of the NPDS Fellow are to integrate action-oriented learning in the practice specialty while ensuring the provision of quality care and protection of the public.

The domains of education, program management, career development and scholarship, and leadership, adopted from Nursing Professional Development: Scope and Standards of Practice (ANA, 2010), frame NPDS practice within a systems model of input, throughput and output.

The NPDS Fellow must, therefore, demonstrate engagement in building a unique knowledge base and competency in the NPD specialty and increasing leadership skill in:
a) Designing educational nursing curricula that is framed by appropriate teaching/ learning theories and validation methods for assessing nurse competency.
b) Facilitating, implementing, and evaluating the outcomes of educational programs.
c) Supporting professional nursing development for his/herself and other nurses.
d) Providing leadership to promote excellence in nursing practice, facilitate change initiatives, and support research.

The NPDS Fellow is accountable for cultivating an environment of inquiry and learning that supports the autonomy and accountability of the nurses' roles, excellence in nursing practice, and upholds the strategic goals and values of his/her organization. The NPDS Fellow includes patient-and-family-centered, culturally competent, and age specific care, as appropriate, throughout the educational programs offered by the department.  The NPDS Fellow is self-directed and purposeful in building and maintaining current professional knowledge and competence within specialty area and participating in peer review.

Minimum Requirements:
BSN in Nursing
3+ years Professional nursing experience
Master’s of Science in progress in Nursing preferred
