Posting Description

MEDIA RELATIONS ASSISTANT, Institute Office of Communications, will provide overall support to the Media Relations department, including scheduling and administrative tasks; manage a comprehensive database of news coverage, journalist contacts and interactions, and press distributions for media relations; and field general media inquiries, as necessary. When appropriate, coordinate with researchers and reporters, podcasters and/or content creators to arrange interviews and answer questions; summarize daily news coverage to proofread and post to the MIT News website; provide support for campus events with media presence and supervise media attending these events; produce media coverage reports with analysis for senior staff of breaking news and major developments; assist with select writing projects such as press releases, briefing documents, monthly analytics reports and content for MIT News and social channels; conduct regular news scans and flag relevant opportunities for media or social engagement; and serve as a backup to the Daily Clips Assistant, who compiles a daily newsletter featuring coverage of MIT from the past 24-hours.

Job Requirements

REQUIRED: High school diploma or equivalent and a minimum of three years of experience working in media relations/public relations or media in general; demonstrated ability to work with the media; excellent writing and interpersonal skills; strong attention to detail; effective analytical and critical thinking skills; and ability to work in a fast-paced environment. PREFERRED: Familiarity with complex database management (i.e. Meltwater, Muck Rack) and reporting as well as web content production (writing and posting); or a Bachelor’s degree.

This is a hybrid position, with on campus/in office days required each week.
