Posting Description

PRINCIPAL GIFTS OFFICER AND DIRECTOR, NYC METRO AND WEST COAST STRATEGY, Sloan Office of External Relations, will have dual responsibility for building relationships with some the MIT’s most affluent prospects on the West Coast and in NYC Metropolitan regions and for building a portfolio of new principal giving prospects to cultivate unaffiliated high net worth individuals; focus on securing funding at the principal gift level ($1M+) for MIT Sloan School and institutional initiatives of the highest value and priority to MIT; manage a portfolio of high-net-worth individuals through the identification, qualification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship cycles; forge relationships with a diverse population of prospects that will help realize seven-, eight-, and nine-figure solicitations and commitments; and travel to meet prospects, often in tandem with school and institutional leadership, and other senior officers of the Institute.

Job Requirements

REQUIRED: A bachelor’s degree; a minimum of seven years of fund-raising experience at the major or principal gift levels; demonstrated ability to deal effectively with donors; proven track record for closing major or principal gifts; demonstrated experience building and managing $1M+ gift conversations and commitments including solicitations that incorporate strategic priorities, annual giving, and planned giving opportunities; proven ability to develop and negotiate complex relationships and proposals; experience in NYC and West Coast regions, knowledge of business culture in regions; and superior interpersonal skills, including the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with senior officers, faculty and volunteers. PREFERRED: Advanced degree; experience working in higher education; experience in annual giving and/or planned giving; and knowledge of fundraising databases such as Advance.
