Posting Description

LAB COORDINATOR, KOEHLER LAB, Koch Institute for Integrative Cancer Research, to ensure smooth day-to-day functioning of laboratory activities by maintaining equipment, supplies, safety compliance, and accurate record keeping and play a crucial role in both supporting, developing and contributing to the labs’ research projects. Responsibilities include conducting preparative synthetic organic chemistry or recombinant protein expression and purification; updating and maintaining the EHS chemical inventory; performing monthly peroxide tests; serving as the EHS Representative, including conducting eyewash station tests and fulfilling chemical reporting requirements; managing laboratory consumables, including restocking and inventory control; receiving and shipping packages; carrying out routine freezer defrosting and maintenance to ensure proper storage conditions; overseeing instrument upkeep, repair, and replacement, including rotary evaporators, automated chromatography systems, microarraying instruments, and other laboratory equipment; preparing, updating and maintaining Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and associated documentation; maintaining and updating the archive of biological and chemical resources, including bacterial and mammalian cell lines, DNA oligos/primers, antibodies, and bioactive small molecules (both purchased and synthesized in-house); coordinating material shipments; performing data management tasks, including ensuring electronic notebooks are closed and backed up, and that paper notebooks are legible and properly archived; managing hazardous and biohazardous materials documentation and registration as well as waste disposal in compliance with safety standards; and conducting simple organic syntheses independently or expressing and purifying recombinant protein from E. Coli, insect cells or mammalian systems.

Job Requirements

REQUIRED: Bachelor's degree in chemistry or a related scientific field; a minimum of four years of experience in a large research laboratory (which may include up to two years of experience gained as an undergraduate); strong organizational skills; attention to detail; experience with organic synthesis or protein expression; and the ability to support both scientific staff and Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) requirements. PREFERRED: advanced degree in a field with a substantial emphasis on chemistry or biochemistry.
