Posting Description

CYCLOTRON MANAGER, Plasma Science and Fusion Center, will oversee the management of a 30 MeV, 800 uA proton cyclotron within the MIT PSFC’s Schmidt Laboratory for Materials in Nuclear Technologies (LMNT) known as LMNT, that supports advancement of fusion energy; be responsible for Cyclotron maintenance, upgrades, and operations include all necessary subsystems such as the vacuum, cryogenic, RF, ion source, and others as well as the beamlines. Responsibility includes management of document, spare parts inventory, maintenance schedules,and trouble shooting efforts; Cyclotron facility maintenance, upgrades, and operations as well as coordination of aspects of the facility with PSFC and MIT Facilities staff; operations and safety training of operators and users of the cyclotron as well as oversight of cyclotron operators; close coordination with PSFC Engineering staff on target end station design, fabrication, assembly, installation, commissioning, and operation; and close coordination with MIT and other institution faculty, scientists, and students in design and execution of scientific experiments using the cyclotron beamline.

Job Requirements

REQUIRED: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in mechanical or electrical engineering (or closely related field); a minimum of five years of experience working with complex mechanical and/or scientific equipment, particularly that involving high voltage, high power RF, vacuum, cryogenic, and/or ionizing radiation; experience with design software (e.g. SolidWorks) and hands-on mechanical fabrication and assembly of mechanical and/or electrical systems; demonstrated record of written documentation and strong verbal and written communication; and willingness to learn, ability to embrace technical challenges, and an eagerness to collaborate. PREFERRED: Expert knowledge and hands-on experience with particle accelerators.
