Posting Description

NECROPSY TECHNICIAN, Division of Comparative Medicine (DCM), to join DCM’s animal resource program and provide support for the pathology group, including necropsy, histology and diagnostic lab support. Primary emphasis includes diagnostic, research, and surveillance necropsies of multiple rodent and nonrodent laboratory animal species according to approved protocols, and the collection and submission of specimens for diagnostic tests and histology. Additional responsibilities include organizing the schedule of daily activities in the necropsy facility; supplying and maintaining the organization of the facility; logging, archiving, retrieving and discarding of diagnostic slides and tissue specimens; training research scientists and postdoctoral fellows in necropsy techniques, and ensuring that biological and chemical safety procedures are practiced in the facility. Histology-related duties will include trimming of tissue and if the candidate has interest or training in histology, other duties may include processing, embedding and sectioning of fixed tissues, performing special histochemical and immunohistological and staining of slides. Diagnostic duties include maintaining health reports, closing out surveillance and research cases in our Laboratory Information System for pathologist, assisting with diagnostic operations such as parasitology or collection of microbiological samples, operation of the complete blood count machine and performing and staining blood smears.

Job Requirements

REQUIRED: High school diploma; willingness to learn new techniques; ability to work with minimal supervision; and strong interpersonal skills and oral and written English proficiency. PREFERRED: Bachelor's degree in biology or related field.
