Job Description

ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR, MIT-BATES RESEARCH AND ENGINEERING CENTER, Laboratory for Nuclear Science (LNS), to undertake on-site leadership responsibilities, oversee talented personnel, and both spearhead the management of ongoing projects and craft proposals for new initiatives.  MIT-Bates hosts diverse research projects, ranging from experimental nuclear and particle physics to accelerator applications to climate change mitigation.  Will formulate long-term strategic plans for the laboratory's growth and impact while collaborating with MIT departments, national laboratories, and industrial sponsors.  May also be able to participate in research activities directly.  Responsibilities include overseeing active projects, supervising personnel, and serving as primary point of contact for the laboratory; cultivating potential users of MIT-Bates space and developing collaborative research proposals for new projects/collaborations; developing and implementing strategic plans for optimizing use of the site and personnel; representing MIT-Bates to external stakeholders and acting as a conduit to local government; working with the LNS fiscal office on a range of reporting and compliance-related tasks, e.g., financial and progress reports, project spending, and financial projections; serving as environment, health and safety (EHS) co-coordinator; and working with the LNS HR administrator on personnel matters.

Job Requirements

REQUIRED:  fifteen years’ experience in a related technical field; five years’ supervisory experience; proven leadership experience successfully managing technical research projects, including costs, schedules, personnel, and reporting; experience with and research interests that align with present and planned MIT-Bates research activities; excellent interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills; self-motivation; and ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks simultaneously.  PREFERRED:  Ph.D. in physics or master’s in engineering/engineering management; experience at a national laboratory, university, or related industry; and experience interfacing with environment, health, and safety groups.  Job #24117 

Salary range: $145,000 - 205,000
