Job Description

DIRECTOR OF ADMINISTRATION AND FINANCE, Urban Studies and Planning (DUSP), to serve as DUSP’s chief financial and administrative strategist.  Will manage DUSP’s finance, academic administration, human resources, information technology, communications, and facilities functions.  Responsibilities include managing and developing strategic and operational plans/systems; developing and implementing new policies/procedures; advising on departmental/school/MIT administrative policies/processes; acting as the first point of contact for most HR-related issues; hiring, training, onboarding, managing, and developing non-academic staff; fostering a diverse, equitable, and inclusive work and learning environment; developing and delegating staff duties/responsibilities; developing and managing budget and financial projections, maintaining statistical data, and producing reports; supervising pre- and post-award administration of research, discretionary, and Institute funding; managing administration of DUSP’s graduate/undergraduate programs; collaborating with faculty and student leadership to allocate aid and process teaching and research assistantships; supervising/coordinating administrative aspects of faculty search and promotion processes, academic appointments, lecturer hiring, and visa applications; space accounting; and other duties as necessary.

Job Requirements

REQUIRED:  bachelor’s degree; seven years’ administrative experience in an academic setting; experience developing and managing employees and supervising teams; excellent analytical, financial, interpersonal, and oral and written communication skills; understanding of financial and research administration in an academic/research environment; ability to communicate with and influence individuals at various organizational levels; experience managing change and handling multiple tasks and changing/conflicting priorities; tact and discretion with sensitive/confidential matters; advanced-level knowledge of databases, spreadsheets, and accounting principles; and knowledge of or ability to rapidly learn MIT’s financial, HR, and operational systems.  PREFERRED:  graduate degree in a related field, experience with graduate student financial aid and visa processes, and knowledge of MS Office 365.  Job #23579-11
