Job Description

POSTDOCTORAL ASSOCIATE, Biological Engineering, Niles Lab, to conduct research applying advanced genetic technologies in malaria drug discovery projects. Projects will seek to establish early-stage genetic and chemical validation for selected targets, towards prioritization into drug discovery pipelines.  Will use CRISPR/Cas-based genome editing tools to create and characterize transgenic malaria parasites; develop and implement phenotypic and other functional assays toward advancing the sophistication with which novel targets and chemical leads can be rapidly identified; participate in and/or lead basic biological studies to advance fundamental understanding of novel targets on a case-by-case basis using a range of molecular biology, genetics, biochemistry, cell biology, and ‘omics (RNA-seq, metabolomics and proteomics) approaches; and perform other tasks.

Job Requirements

REQUIRED:  Ph.D. in biological/life science field, genetic engineering, or a closely related field; interest in malaria research; direct experience using genome editing tools to create and validate transgenic organisms using various molecular, cellular, and biochemical methods; experience developing quantitative assays (broadly defined), and quantitative analysis of dose-response assays done in moderate to high throughput; leadership skills for conducting collaborative research within the lab and with collaborators; and ability to initiate new projects/experiments while working independently and as part of a team on time-sensitive, milestone-driven projects.  PREFERRED:  at least two years of experience studying malaria or another protozoan parasite biology or bacterial/fungal pathogens, proficiency with basic microbiology and molecular biology (PCR, cloning, western blot, etc,), and direct experience using next-generation sequencing in quantitative assays.  Job #21823
