SCIENCE COMMUNICATIONS SPECIALIST, Kavli Institute for Astrophysics and Space Research (MKI)-Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) Team (part-time, 25%), to assist with media generation and coverage for mission events and scientific discoveries. Will coordinate closely with project scientists within the TESS Science Office (TSO) as well as mission and media partners at MIT School of Science, NASA headquarters (HQ), NASA Goddard Spaceflight Center (GSFC), NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), and Northrup Grumman Space Systems. Will develop media response by MKI for upcoming announcements of new research findings and mission-related events as well as its response to external announcements and events. This includes prompt, responsive feedback and fact-checking on upcoming media products created by mission partners on behalf of MKI and managing both original and reshared messaging and media products on the @TESSatMIT Twitter account and on the tess.mit.edu website.
TESS is well on its way to discovering thousands of exoplanets in orbit around the brightest stars in the sky. This first-ever spaceborne all-sky transit survey of the solar neighborhood is identifying planets ranging from Earth- to Jupiter-sized, orbiting stars with stellar types and temperatures spanning a wide range. The MKI team includes research scientists, students, postdoctoral associates, and a range of technical staff as one coherent, collaborative team.
REQUIRED: a bachelor’s degree; experience with communication of astrophysics or related scientific material and with generating social media content; and ability to work in a team-based environment across all levels and to communicate collaboratively at the highest technical levels. PREFERRED: experience working with NASA technical communications, familiarity with TweetDeck and WordPress, and an interest or background in astrophysics. Job #19601-6
