BOOKSELLER, MIT Press (2 openings, part-time, 21 hrs/wk.), to perform complex customer service, sales, merchandising, and clerical duties in a fast-paced environment; and assist in hosting in-store and off-site events. Responsibilities include assisting customers in finding and purchasing books; developing proficiency with point-of-sale system, Anthology; assisting visitors in locating resources at MIT and in surrounding neighborhood; answering questions and taking orders via telephone; responding to customer queries via email; making deliveries to various campus locations; processing in-store and off-site sales; developing knowledge of Press’ publications and related subject areas representing the bookstore at off-site retail events, and be comfortable doing so independently; lifting and unpacking incoming cartons of books weighing up to forty pounds; shelving and straightening store displays; keeping store sections/display areas/overstock areas neat and alphabetical; restocking; cleaning; knowing all store sections and their respective overstock areas; pulling stock via sale reports in preparation for returns; packing orders and returns for shipping; preparing cash deposits and daily sales reports; filing; entering bibliographic data into inventory database; and other duties as needed.
REQUIRED: high school diploma or its equivalent; self-motivation; working knowledge of Windows, MS Word, Excel, and Outlook or other email program; excellent interpersonal and oral and written communication skills; ability to work independently and in a team-oriented environment; organizational skills; ability to juggle multiple tasks/priorities and work quickly and accurately under pressure despite frequent interruptions; and discretion and judgment with confidential information/issues. PREFERRED: one year of experience working in a bookstore or other retail environment; familiarity with MIT and the Press’s publications; and an interest in scholarly or nonfiction publishing. Must be available to work a flexible schedule that includes evenings and weekends.
