SENIOR BOOKSELLER, MIT Press, to perform complex customer service, sales, merchandising, and clerical duties in a fast-paced retail environment. Responsibilities include providing backup to booksellers; assisting store visitors; answering questions and taking orders; reconciling off-site event sales and completing reporting; maintaining proficiency with Anthology point-of-sale system and all sales functions; making sales recommendations to customers; preparing short written book reviews; developing knowledge of Press publications and related subject areas; representing the bookstore at off-site retail events; ensuring backlist orders are correct and that orders are placed on schedule; tracking/correcting unresolved ordering issues; meeting with reps and ordering front-list in consultation with the manager; analyzing sales reports; preparing and placing purchase orders; organizing daily deliveries; tracking/correcting unresolved shipping issues; monitoring invoices; lifting/unpacking incoming cartons of books, affixing prices, and entering details into inventory system; directing booksellers in daily maintenance of sales floor; developing in-store displays; daily shelving and straightening of displays; maintaining assigned subject areas; keeping store neat and orderly; restocking; cleaning; supervising returns; preparing inventory for return; packing orders and returns for shipping; preparing cash deposits and daily sales reports; assisting in organizing invoices and billing statements for entry; filing; entering bibliographic data into database; handling accounts payable duties; assisting with training new employees; supervising booksellers in manager’s absence; handling customer disputes; and other duties as needed.
REQUIRED: high school diploma or its equivalent; two years’ experience in sales and bookstore operations; excellent organizational and communication skills; strong computer skills (MS Word, Excel), ability to coordinate and prioritize projects/ tasks, and discretion and judgment with confidential information/issues.
