LEAD TECHNICAL INSTRUCTOR, LIVING MACHINES, School of Engineering-New Engineering Education Transformation (NEET) , to teach, train, and mentor an interdepartmental group of undergraduate students. A major focus will be to engage deeply and continually with sophomores, juniors, and seniors to help build the Living Machines community. Will have primary responsibility for a sophomore-year, project-based class that leverages biological, mechanical, electrical, and chemical engineering concepts to build devices that culture, monitor, and/or modulate complex human tissue functions such as the gut mucosal-microbiome interface. Will also mentor juniors and seniors in multidisciplinary, faculty-supervised projects. Strong emphasis will be placed on technical instruction of specialized methods outside the scope of available curricular lab subjects (e.g., microfluidics, biomaterials, etc.). Will support faculty lectures by creating and delivering demonstrations and writing lab assignments; hold classroom-based tutorial sessions and interactive design reviews, guiding students in process planning and experimental model generation; grade assignments including device prototypes, written responses, and process data; collaborate on maintaining lab operations, including safety; deliver training on specialized equipment; and assist students performing research-oriented work in the lab.
REQUIRED: at least two years’ relevant experience and developed expertise in at least three areas related to the Living Machines thread, including microfabrication/biomaterials, microfluidics, modeling biological transport phenomena and reaction kinetics, microscopy and optics, in vitro organogenesis/tissue engineering (with primary human cells and from a quantitative rather than phenomenological perspective), and microbial engineering/synthetic biology; Ph.D. in bioengineering or related field (i.e., mechanical, chemical, or electrical engineering with significant molecular life science emphasis in thesis/postdoctoral work); demonstrated expertise in engineering analysis on interdisciplinary projects and in teaching and managing undergraduate student projects; and strong organizational and communication skills.
