RESEARCH SCIENTIST, Kavli Institute for Astrophysics and Space Research, to join the MIT Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO) project. As a member of the MIT LIGO group, will carry out research and technical projects in support of the Advanced LIGO detectors, mainly at MIT, but with some travel to the LIGO observatories in Hanford, Washington, and Livingston, Louisiana. Over the next several years, the MIT group will be developing and deploying the technology for reducing quantum noise in the Advanced LIGO interferometers through the use of squeezed light injection. Will have significant involvement in this project, both in the R&D and the subsequent fabrication phase. Other projects will bear on the goals of first bringing Advanced LIGO to full design sensitivity and then to go beyond that with new upgrades to the detectors. Tasks could range from developing additional detector technologies to simulation and modeling contributions.
REQUIRED: a Ph.D. in physics, a minimum of two years’ post-Ph.D. experience in the field of interferometry, a demonstrated record of scientific research, and a strong interest in future developments in gravitational-wave detectors.
