Position Description:

More than 1,400 students are enrolled in MCW’s medical school and graduate school programs in Milwaukee, Green Bay, and Central Wisconsin. MCW’s School of Pharmacy opened in 2017. A major national research center, MCW is the largest research institution in the Milwaukee metro area and second largest in Wisconsin. In FY2016, faculty received more than $184 million in external support for research, teaching, training, and related purposes. This total includes highly competitive research and training awards from the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Annually, MCW faculty direct or collaborate on more than 3,100 research studies, including clinical trials. Additionally, more than 1,500 physicians provide care in virtually every specialty of medicine for more than 525,000 patients annually.

The Assistant Vice President, Philanthropy (AVPP) is responsible for the development, coordination, and execution of all fundraising activities to include - principal, major, leadership individual, planned and corporations/foundation giving. The AVPP will establish and maintain collaborative, collegial relationships with key institutional partners, especially the Froedtert Hospital Foundation Board, Froedtert MCW Board of Trustees, Institutional Advancement Committee, and work in close partnership with the Campaign Advisory Committee. She/he will also develop and maintain a robust portfolio of 50-75 principal/major gift prospects and serves as the primary strategist on behalf of the department for all donor activities

Leadership:

  • Serves as the subject matter expert for philanthropy, educates/consults MCW and Froedtert executives, board members, directors, chairs and others on all matters related to philanthropy.
  • Leads all facets of principal ($1M+), major ($100K+), and leadership individual ($10K+) giving. Includes strategy, budget, staff/program design and execution.
  • In partnership with the Chief Development Officer, develops and coordinates a master plan for all fundraising activities and integrates the fundraising effort with program and capital needs of Froedtert’s and MCW’s long-range plans; ensuring the achievement of fundraising priorities and goals.
  • Directs the planning, solicitation and appropriate stewardship for all appeals and special projects presented to various donor groups.
  • Collaborates with Chief Development Officer and Institutional Advancement Leadership Team to promote a results-driven, collaborative work environment focused on strategic planning and process improvement within the functional areas of the Office of Institutional Advancement.
  • Ensures there is continued growth and strength in the base of prospective donors who have the capacity and are connected to the organization in the gift procurement process.

Staff Management:

  • Leads the fundraising staff in budget preparations, oversees fundraising operating budgets and the formulation of annual productivity goals for achieving fundraising targets.
  • Recruits, motivates, organizes, manages, trains, and leads the fundraising staff in a manner which promotes professional accomplishments and career enhancement.
  • Directly supervises the managers and Development Officers in the areas of principal, major, planned, regional, corporations/foundations and leadership individual giving.
  • Establishes and holds team accountable for an appropriate system of metrics and evaluates staff based on these and other performance metrics.
  • Mentors, coaches, and serves as a role model to staff for high performance as professionals and leaders.
  • Collaborates with leadership team to oversee the selection, implementation, and utilization of technology to effectively address the objectives of stakeholders and meet the needs of the development operation in an efficient and cost-effective manner.

Collaborative Partnerships:

  • Builds long-term relationships with organizational stakeholders, alumni, and friends in support of the mission of Froedtert and MCW.
  • Works in close collaboration with the MCW Alumni Board.
  • Develops and manages a successful portfolio between 50-75 principal giving prospects.
  • Collaborates with Prospect Management and Research as well as Database Information Services teams to guide prospect assignments and refine reports and tracking systems to ensure effective management of prospects for each gift officer.
  • Works closely with the Chief Development Officer, institutional leaders, and department chairs to identify, quantify and understand the institution’s philanthropic priorities and develop strategies necessary to guide clinicians, researchers, and staff to enhance philanthropic support for the institution’s highest priorities.

Knowledge - Skills - Abilities

  • The AVPP will be an experienced development professional with a demonstrated track record as a principal gift fundraiser. She/he will lead the advancement of Froedtert and MCW mission and values.
  • Leadership experience in academic and healthcare philanthropy is preferred.
  • The AVPP will possess an expert knowledgebase of the entire range of advancement activity and a record of innovation and creativity that has led to increased philanthropic support of her/his institution.
  • Leadership experience with a capital or comprehensive campaign is required.
  • The AVPP will possess significant experience as demonstrated by a record of 10 years+ experience in a complex organization with a successful track record of securing principal gifts.
  • Experience and judgment necessary to navigate an institution of considerable size and complexity that is characterized by innovation, growth, constant change, and a widely distributed workforce.
  • Inclusive leadership abilities, including a high degree of emotional maturity, and the ability to build a culture of trust and an adaptive communication style that fosters strong relationships and effective results through engagement of diverse constituencies and organizations.
  • Demonstrated success working directly with volunteers and boards.
  • Demonstrated success leading a diverse workforce. Track record of recruiting and developing a diverse team.
  • Proven ability to engage productively at the most senior level on challenges facing academic and healthcare systems beyond her/his responsibility.
  • Exceptional communications and interpersonal skills.
  • A leader who has demonstrated success achieving challenging performance goals in a complex environment.
  • Demonstrated success building relationships with diverse constituencies and stakeholders.
  • A leader who embodies responsible planning/management of funds and can build long-term, meaningful relationships with donors and the community.
