Position Description:

Implementation Scientist Research Faculty Position (PhD or MD/DO or MBBS required)

The Department of Medicine at the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) invites applications for a full-time faculty position at Assistant or Associate Professor level. Faculty candidates must have training in implementation science and quantitative methodology. This should include research experience in conducting analyses related to the delivery, conduct, or outcomes of healthcare, in either a health system or community setting. Strong candidates will demonstrate an ability to develop well-designed applications for federal research funding, support clinical and health services researchers in development of implementation aims in applications for federal funding, and have a background of publications in peer-reviewed journals. Research addressing population health, developing programs to optimize health outcomes for vulnerable populations, or investigating disparities in care is valued. Expertise in conducting randomized controlled trials or designing and evaluating implementation of projects within the health system are also encouraged. Successful candidates should demonstrate strong interpersonal and communication skills essential for developing and working with multidisciplinary teams and engaging faculty and trainees, and an interest in conducting independent research as well as supporting multidisciplinary teams in developing collaborative grant applications.

Roles and Expectations:

  1. Build an independent and externally funded portfolio.
  2. Support multidisciplinary research teams in federal funding applications.
  3. Maintain scholarly productivity through publications of peer reviewed manuscripts and speaking at national/international conferences.
  4. Advise master’s and doctoral students and mentor medical students.
  5. Conduct quantitative analyses and review analyses conducted by master’s level statisticians in support of implementation science research.
  6. Support Department and Division goals to increase research productivity through collaborations with clinical faculty.
  7. Possibility to teach graduate level courses to master’s and doctoral students.

About Division of General Internal Medicine

The Division of General Internal Medicine is one of ten divisions within the Department of Medicine at the Medical College of Wisconsin. The mission is best expressed through its commitment to patient care, medical education, research, and innovation, as well as its regional and national presence as a leader in the comprehensive care and treatment of the adult patient. The Division consists of seven Sections: four clinical sections and three non-clinical sections. The clinical sections of Primary Care, Hospitalist Medicine, Perioperative and Consultative Medicine, and the VA General Internal Medicine (including both primary care and hospitalist medicine) focus on responding to our constantly evolving landscape of healthcare at both Froedtert Hospital and the Clement J. Zablocki VA Medical Center. The three non-clinical sections allow for rapid growth and strong infrastructure to support the three additional missions of MCW: research (through the Research Section), education (through the Faculty Development Section, and community engagement (through the Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Community Engagement Section). Many faculty members serve in leadership roles with the Society of General Internal Medicine, the Society of Hospital Medicine and the American College of Physicians, and present frequently at regional and national meetings of these societies. The Division is home to many of the key educational leaders in the Department of Medicine, and a large health services research group with over $10 million in federal research funding. The GIM Research Section aims to create research infrastructure and build a culture of research across the Division that facilitates and expands research funding, supporting clinical, population, education, and industry research.  

About Center for Advancing Population Science

The mission of the Center for Advancing Population Sciences (CAPS) is to develop, test, and implement innovative strategies for transforming healthcare that optimizes quality, value, and cost. As an interdisciplinary group of health services researchers collaborating in a diverse array of subject areas, CAPS conducts research on health care services and related health outcomes, facilitates a supportive environment for MCW investigators developing externally funded research programs, determines the need for and recruits new faculty in targeted methodologic areas, and provides a seminar series to enhance collaboration. In bringing together a diverse group of investigators, the Center fosters the creation of innovative ideas regarding how to evaluate and improve population health across diverse populations and geographic regions. CAPS currently supports $40 million in active research awards, with over half funded through the National Institute of Health. Research focus areas include health systems, population health research, health disparities/health equity, implementation science, and global health research. Efforts have focused on building meaningful collaborations to support innovative research, analysis, implementation and impact at a local and global level.

Position Requirements:

Applicants must have a doctoral degree (i.e. PhD) or a combination of medical degree and research training (i.e. MD, MS) with strong theoretical grounding and training in implementation science, excellent oral and written communication skills to support rigorous program of research, and experience in developing and conducting quantitative or mixed methods methodology. The candidate will be appointed in the Department of Medicine, Division of General Internal Medicine with tenure-track appointment, and research center membership at the Center for Advancing Population Science. Appointment rank will be commensurate with academic accomplishments and experience.
