Position Description:

The Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) invites applicants and nominations for the role of Associate Dean, Office of Global Health. In this highly visible leadership role, the Associate Dean will lead and oversee the administration and guidance of the Office of Global Health. The ideal candidate is an innovative leader and excellent collaborator with the skills to develop a strong strategic plan.

The Associate Dean will be responsible for the overall operation of the Office of Global Health, including responsibility for hiring and managing personnel and budgetary oversight. The Associate Dean will serve as a resource on global health best practices for leaders in all of the MCW Departments/Centers/Institutes. This role will have significant local, regional, national, and international exposure and will lead the efforts to convene globally engaged faculty and trainees in global health to cultivate and facilitate collaborations and partnerships.  


About the Office of Global Health

The Office of Global Health (OGH) was established in January 2010. The vision is to catalyze the training of the next generation of global health leaders and address local and global health inequities across the globe. The mission is to reduce global health inequities through local and global multi-institutional collaborative partnerships in education, patient care, research, and genuine community engagement.


The goal of the OGH is to develop a sustainable framework for multidisciplinary collaboration that integrates and advances the global health sciences. Its guiding principles are:

Primary Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Lead, plan, and execute the next strategic plan to elevate the impact of the Office of Global Health with close integration of MCW’s four missions: community engagement, education, patient care, and research across all three campuses and three schools
  • Facilitate recruitment and retainment, alongside Department, Institute and Center leaders, of global health faculty
  • Mentor globally engaged faculty; support the work of global health scholars on campus and foster collaboration
  • Serve to sustain and expand global health research including extra-mural funding opportunities, facilitate research to practice opportunities across disciplines and partnerships – campus-wide and beyond with bi-directional benefits with our global partners.
  • Serve to sustain and expand global health education, support faculty across campus to ensure curricula reflects the most recent global health literature and principles of practices
  • Organize, administrate, and continuously review all components of the Office of Global Health
  • Lead strategic planning and development for global health with the academic medical center affiliates
  • Monitor and be responsible for all fiscal management matters (e.g., budget development, expenditures, extramural funding, etc.)
  • Foster future growth, visibility, and expansion of MCW’s globally engaged faculty’s efforts 
  • Collaborate with MCW senior leadership and Global Health Liaisons to facilitate the sharing of knowledge and resources
  • Engage in the greater Milwaukee area community-based organizations, universities’ global health leaders, Midwestern Universities for Global Health leaders, administration, and members of the Consortium of Universities for Global Health, and MCW faculty’s international collaborators and partners
  • Serve as the principal spokesperson for the Office of Global Health, reflecting and enhancing its respected standing within local, state, regional, national, and international platforms


Reporting Relationships

The Associate Dean will report to the Dean, MCW School of Medicine and will closely collaborate with global health administrative and educational leads (School of Medicine’s Global Health Pathway, Graduate School’s Master of Science in Global Health Equity, GME Global Health Scholars, Pediatric Community and Global Health Pathway, MCW Global Health Liaisons, Center for Advancing Population Science Global Health Unit). Direct reports to the Associate Dean are the professional staff of the Office of Global Health and may be expanded depending upon the vision of the Associate Dean. The successful candidate must have collaborative leadership skills in operating in a highly matrixed environment.

Position Requirements:

Minimum Required Education: MD and/or PhD; candidates must possess qualifications for a full-time effort faculty appointment at MCW.

Minimum Required Experience:

  • A significant leadership role in a complex, multi-faceted university or academic medical center, with demonstrated strategic and implementation skills.
  • A distinguished academic and professional career, including administration of academic programs.
  • A proven track record in extramurally funded research, training programs, and/or technical assistance programs related to global health.
  • A proven commitment to diversity, from team building to embracing diverse perspectives related to global health and development.
  • Superior track record in implementing the guiding principles of ethical engagement while building a sustainable framework for multidisciplinary collaboration with diverse key stakeholders in global health
  • Experience in collaborating with government organizations, non-governmental organizations, universities, and healthcare systems locally and internationally
  • An ability to articulate a compelling vision and implement a strategic plan that engages and advocates for faculty, staff, students, and local and global partnerships
  • Unquestionable integrity, awareness, and practice of ethical considerations in global engagement


Preferred Experience: A Master of Public Health/Global Health or other formal global health training and professional experience collaborating with diverse communities and populations both in locally and abroad.


FTE: 1.0 (Up to 0.5 FTE dedicated to the Associate Dean position, and the remaining FTE dedicated to area of specialty)
