Responsible for developing and implementing the pipeline Integrity Management Program (IMP) for facilities within the Kinder Morgan Product Pipelines business unit including performing risk analysis on assigned pipeline assets, providing pipeline integrity related technical support, development and continuous improvement of pipeline integrity related programs, systems and applications.  The Risk Engineer will report to the Manager of Risk Engineering.

The primary duties of this role are as follows:

  • Plan and execute requirements of the IMP including identifying, prioritizing, and addressing integrity threats for assigned pipeline assets
    • Implement the risk assessment/threat evaluation, risk ranking, long term assessment planning on selected pipeline assets
    • Facilitate P&MM analyses, leak detection analyses, emergency flow restriction device analyses, and facility risk assessments
    • Fully understand the pipeline integrity threats and risks for assigned pipeline assets
    • Run risk model(s) for specific assets including coordination of data collection, understanding the risk algorithms, reviewing and confirming results, and utilizing the risk output
    • Develop and maintain long term ILI and integrity assessment plan for HCA segments, non-HCA segments, and facilities, including working with Field Integrity Services and Project Management to develop budget estimates based upon the long term plan
    • Track progress of integrity assessments during the year and provide annual reporting metrics
    • Initiate and lead interaction with appropriate subject matter experts and other stakeholders for specific threats to assist in planning and to secure feedback on program improvements
  • Provide training and support to other company groups as needed such as Field Integrity Services, IT, Corrosion, In-line Inspection, Pipeline Data Systems, Engineering and Operations
  • Identify and present potential pipeline integrity process improvements and follow-through with implementation once stakeholder/management agreement for the improvement is obtained
  • Review, edit and provide feedback regarding any proposed procedure or process variance requests
  • Provide support for other aspects of integrity related programs, processes, and procedures as required
  • Represent company in regulatory interactions as needed



  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering
  • Experience working with historical pipeline integrity datasets such as in-line inspection, pressure test, and direct assessment records
  • Strong effective, timely, clear and concise verbal and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated analytical and problem solving skills with logical thought processes
  • Demonstrated ability for focused attention to detail
  • Ability and willingness to perform all essential functions of the position including those listed above
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and refine processes
  • Ability and willingness to understand and implement all company/job related processes, procedures, guidelines and best practices
  • Ability and willingness to coordinate projects and programs with field operating personnel, project engineers, and outside entities

Work Conditions

  • Must be willing and able to work in a corporate environment
  • May require travel up to 10% depending on needs

Preferred Experience, Skills and Knowledge

  • Demonstrated ability to identify, characterize, communicate, and resolve complex pipeline data issues in support of a risk program
  • Experience with MS SQL Server, MS Access and/or database queries
  • Demonstrated ability to query database to support ad hoc data integration, QA/QC, and data analysis requests
  • Demonstrated ability to identify gaps in processes and follow through with solutions
  • Demonstrated ability to review, organize, and utilize detailed information
  • Demonstrated ability to develop, write, and document processes and procedures
  • Knowledge of PHMSA Part 195 regulations with detailed knowledge of 49 CFR Part 195.452 and NEB OPR Regulations
  • Knowledge and understanding of API 1160 standard
  • Fundamental knowledge of pipeline integrity threats and their associated mechanisms
  • Knowledge in various phases of corrosion as related to the pipeline industry including internal, external and atmospheric corrosion
  • Understanding of methods utilized for calculating failure pressures and safe pressure on conventional corrosion related anomalies
  • Knowledge of general pipeline operations standards, practices and procedures
