BUSINESS UNIT:  PRODUCT PIPELINES 

Kinder Morgan is the largest independent transporter of petroleum products in North America, transporting approximately 2.4 million barrels per day. The great majority of these products are transported through our Products Pipelines business, which moves gasoline, jet fuel, diesel, natural gas liquids and condensate through about 9,500 miles of pipelines. We also have approximately 65 liquids terminals in this business segment that store fuels and offer blending services for ethanol and biofuels.

 Primary Purpose:

  • Leverage business development colleagues, external relationships and market intelligence to execute spot and term trades. optimize trade flows around existing company assets and maximize netback realizations for the company
  • Geographic areas of responsibility maybe adjusted based on specific candidate experience, with initial focus on the Eagle Ford region.
  • Candidates may also be expected to participate in existing KM trading activities in the Bakken region.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Develop and execute strategies to monetize and ensure optimal flow of crude oil
  • Utilize 3rd party transportation in areas where KM is not present and structure terms of contracts, which generate sufficient revenues
  • Create and implement contingency plans to assure flow of production through logistics and commercial agreements
  • Maintain essential knowledge of infrastructure for commodity markets
  • Support delivery of annual business plan target for the region
  • Monitor deal profitability and manage risk (e.g. pricing, logistics, royalties) and adhere to all trading procedures and controls
  • Engage with industry experts and maintain strong internal and external relationships
  • Collaborate with regional trading teams to understand and trade based on global supply and demand
  • This position will be responsible for a host of daily, weekly and quarterly duties including participation in operational conference calls, maintaining market price database, updating internal business overviews/status reports, and preparing senior management reports, as well as other duties, as needed.

 *Position level will be dependent on the experience and job skills of successful candidate.



Education:

  • Bachelors degree in marketing, business, engineering or equivalent
  • Equivalent work experience may be considered in lieu of degree

Experience/Specific Knowledge:

  • Must have at least 7+ years of experience in the Crude Oil industry and have established relationships with its primary participants including producers, traders and refiners.
  • Must have a sound understanding of domestic Crude Oil supply and demand centers and the interaction between them including Bakken, Eagle Ford, Cushing, and the US Gulf Coast.
  • Must have an understanding of the U.S. Crude Oil energy infrastructure and the various means utilized for the transportation of Crude Oil from producing areas to trading hubs and refining centers (e.g., pipelines, rail, truck and marine).
  • Must have knowledge of contracts routinely used in the Crude Oil purchasing and marketing industry and also have an understanding of the economic factors involved in purchasing and marketing Crude Oil.
  • Must have knowledge of the upstream and downstream energy industry participants, including the major producers in the prolific producing basins, the Crude Oil trading community as well as refinery operators. 
  • Prior experience should demonstrate a proficiency in planning, marketing and business development.

Certifications, licenses and/or registrations:

  • A satisfactory driving record as determined by the Company and a current valid state driver’s license is required.

Competencies, skills and abilities:

  • Must be capable of developing and maintaining productive business relationships with the Crude Oil purchasing and marketing community.
  • Must have strong interpersonal skills to work not only with external customers but also with other KM disciplines, including Commercial, Scheduling, Legal, Contract Administration, Operations and Engineering/Project Management in order to successfully evaluate and develop business opportunities.
  • Candidate must be self-motivated, have an enthusiastic work ethic and the ability to represent Kinder Morgan in accordance with our high ethical standards. 
  • Ability to negotiate customer agreements.
  • Must possess strong organizational skills and attention to detail. 
  • Must have the ability to work with and as part of a team, which includes sharing in accolades and accepting responsibility. 
  • Must be able to take direction from supervision, adapt to changing priorities, adhere to company policies and procedures, maintain required training certifications and meet/exceed annual budget expectations. 
  • Experience in economic analysis.
  • Prior experience working with legal documents and/or detailed and confidential material. 
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills are required. 
  • Proficient with computer applications, including Microsoft Excel, Word, Powerpoint and Outlook.

Working Conditions:

  • This position will be located in our corporate office in downtown Houston.  KM currently has a hybrid work schedule: M-W in the office, Th/Fr working from home.
  • Predominately this position will work in an office environment.  Site visits, however, may require walking about facilities which could expose one to external elements as well as smells and fumes associated with petroleum products. 
  • Field activities may include walking amidst construction sites, possibly climbing, working around heavy equipment, negotiating rough terrain, areas of loose rock and working in confined spaces. 
  • Percentage of travel anticipated to be 10-20%

Preferred education, experience, certifications, competencies, skills and abilities:

  • MBA in marketing, business, engineering or equivalent
