What your job will be like:


Are you looking to take your leadership skills to the next level? As an Accelerator Operations Crew Chief, you will oversee the Accelerator Operators on their shift and be responsible for the safe and efficient operation of the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility (CEBAF) accelerator and its subsystems.

In this role you will:

  • provide oversight of program execution, control room staff and all control room activities
  • ensure the accelerator is operated in compliance with the Accelerator Safety Envelope and all applicable Jefferson Lab policies and procedures
  • be responsible for understanding all workplace hazards, safety procedures and rules and requirements governing day-to-day accelerator operations
  • qualify as an Accelerator Operator within 6 months and Crew Chief within 1 year
  • work 8 hour shifts that include alternating weekends (chared by all Crew Chiefs and Accelerator Operators)
  • assist in staffing of the control room, providing coverage for those on leave



Qualifications We Require:
- Bachelor's Degree in Physics or other highly technical, engineering or scientific discipline plus 5 or more years of operational experience at a particle accelerator or equivalent complex facility such as nuclear power plant operations. Equivalent combination of related education, experience and specific training may be considered.
- Demonstrated strong communication, coordination, and leadership skills in a highly technical, collaborative environment. After hours and on weekends, the Crew Chief is usually the senior Operations person on site and must have the drive to lead the program, and the make decisions necessary to carry out their shift plan. At all times the Crew Chief must be able to lead and manage their Operators and others under their authority to safely and efficiently carry out their duties.

Qualifications we desire:
- Control Room leadership experience at a particle accelerator or equivalent complex facility such as nuclear power plant operations.
- Master's Degree in Physics or other highly technical, engineering or scientific discipline.

All Operators and Crew Chiefs have other skills and abilities they put to use during accelerator down periods or during non-shift work days between shifts. These skills and abilities can range from software development to technical work with other electrical or mechanical groups. Crew Chiefs must work with their supervisor to select productive projects to work on that match their skills and abilities.
