What your job will be like:

The STARS Accountant serves in the Chief Financial Office and will be responsible for initiating, completing, and overseeing preparation and transmission of the Laboratory’s financial data into the Standard Accounting and Reporting System (STARS) for Jefferson Science Associates on behalf of the U.S. Department of Energy. This will include reconciling account costing information, and analyzing and interpreting accounting data to advise and make recommendations that may pertain to general ledger, projects, property and other assets.

In this role you will:

  • Collaborate with IT and Financial Planning & Analysis groups to support the month-end process for allocating funding to costs on the STARS feed
  • Identify, report and track Improper Payments in log
  • Prepare monthly balance sheet reconciliations
  • Assist with internal and external audits relating to GL, AR and Billings
  • Prepare monthly billings to customers
  • Prepare invoices, statements, and expenditure reports for WFO, CRADA & Site Offices
  • Research receipts, prepare vouchers and audit reports as needed
  • Enter invoices/billing into G-Invoicing or other government systems as needed
  • Perform system testing for CostPoint Accounting modules
  • Provide courteous and efficient customer service to the lab community, customers and vendors while maintaining information in a confidential manner
  • Serve as backup within the Accounting group



Qualifications We Require:

Education:

  • Bachelor’s Degree, or
  • Equivalent combination of education, experience, and specific training

Experience: 

  • Minimum of four years’ experience working in the accounting field 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: 

  • Familiar with government contractor regulations to ensure compliance with approval processes, Financial Management handbook guidance for cash management, and audit requirements
  • Good working knowledge of accounting practices and theory
  • Demonstrate strong verbal and written communications, problem-solving and math skills, and calculator and keyboard skills
  • Ability to maintain and promote a positive attitude in a demanding work environment
  • Ability to adapt and perform under changing work requirements
  • Working knowledge of accounts payable practices and theory
  • Fluent in Microsoft Word, Excel and email platforms like Microsoft Outlook
  • Good decision-making and conflict resolution skills
  • Strong organizational coordinator and analytical skills 

Qualifications We Desire: 

Experience: 

  • Experience with integrated project driven accounting systems such as CostPoint in a Federal Government or government contractor environment 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Working knowledge of CostPoint
  • Knowledge of FAR and CAS
