The Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility (CEBAF) is a 12 GeV CW recirculating linear accelerator with four fixed target experimental halls. A proposal has been put forward to approximately double the energy (~20-24 GeV) of the machine using Fixed-Field, Alternating Gradient (FFA) technology. The idea is to replace the highest energy recirculation arcs with FFA arcs, allowing for more passes through CEBAF’s pair of linacs.
This postdoctoral candidate, primarily funded by a Laboratory Directed Research and Development (LDRD) grant, will take a leading role in the completion of Start-to-End (S2E) optics and beam dynamics simulations of the FFA@CEBAF design. One(1) year with renewal possible pending availabitily of funds.
Working under general direction of the Primary Investigators, the selected candidate will take charge of the optics and beam dynamics simulation efforts. These simulations will involve optics and beam dynamics studies for FFA and conventional accelerator technology, as well as error studies, beam loss and power depositions studies, and some diagnostics work. It is expected that some time will be spent working with and helping to guide the efforts of a PhD student, who will be working closely with the chosen candidate.
The selected candidate will be a member of the Center for Advanced Study of Accelerators (CASA), in the Accelerator Physics group. It is expected that 90% of their time will be spent working on this project, with the remaining 10% to be used for other interests.
Essential Job Functions: Plans, coordinates and completes beam dynamics projects independently, or as part of a team. Proven experience with beam dynamics and optics simulations. A record of previous start-to-end simulations is desirable. Strong programming and coding skills will be necessary for this position. Must be willing and able to regularly document progress and codes, as well as be familiar with version control concepts. Must be capable of writing up work for publication in papers and tech notes. Ability to communicate and work as a part of a diverse team, as well as represent the work in conferences and workshops. Experience and/or desire in supervision and/or guidance of students is desirable.
