POSITION POSTED: SEPTEMBER 8, 2021 Position Summary: The Site Occupational Medical Director (SOMD) manages the delivery of occupational medicine services for workers at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (TJNAF), also known as Jefferson Lab. The SOMD is responsible for ensuring the lab’s full compliance with all requirements in 10CFR 851(8) “Occupational Medicine” and DOE Order 341.1A “Federal Employee Health Services” and all applicable Federal, State and local medical standards. This is a full time position reporting to the Environment, Safety, and Health (ESH) Director and supervises a staff of two (one LPN and one CMA). The SOMD works with Jefferson Lab staff and leadership across all levels of the organization and represents TJNAF on the DOE-wide SOMD community of practice.
Jefferson Lab is an internationally recognized nuclear physics research and development center located on a modern 160-acre campus in Newport News, Virginia. The campus is home to 750 scientists, engineers, and support staff that design, develop, and operate advanced superconducting radio frequency accelerators and serve a 1,600 member user community pursuing discovery-class research in nuclear physics. Jefferson Lab is a Federally Funded Research and Development Center managed and operated by Jefferson Science Associates, LLC under a long-term contract with the United States Department of Energy (DOE).
Essential Job Functions:
(1) Maintain and improve existing occupational medicine program plans, and create new plans as needed to maintain an effective, compliant, and proactive occupational medicine program at Jefferson Lab in keeping with the requirements of Title 10 CFR §851.
(2) Maintain a system of records containing medical, health history, exposure history, and demographic data for occupational medicine purposes for each employee provided medical services.
(3) Provide worker health evaluations in accordance with current sound and acceptable medical practices and all pertinent statutory and regulatory requirements. Health evaluations are required:
a. At the time of employment (approximately 75/year)
b. Qualifications based fitness-for-duty evaluations (approximately 100/year)
c. Diagnostic examinations to evaluate employee injuries and illness to determine work-relatedness, applicability of medical restrictions, and referral for definitive care (approximately 25/year)
d. Return to work evaluation (approximately 100/year)
e. When requested, general health evaluation to establish a record of physical condition at separation of employment (approximately 25/year).
(4) Monitor injured and ill workers to facilitate rehabilitation and safe return-to-work to minimize lost time and costs. Place workers under medical restrictions when health evaluations indicate the worker should not perform certain tasks.
(5) Maintain surveillance programs to identify and manage the principal preventable causes of premature morbidity and mortality affecting worker health and productivity. Develop regular messaging and share publications to educate staff on health and wellness matters.
(6) Review and approve the medical and behavioral aspects of employee counseling and health promotional programs (EAP, substance abuse, wellness, CPR/First Aid, immunization, blood-borne pathogens, bio-hazardous waste, emergency response, disaster preparedness, and others).
(7) Serve as the Medical Review Officer of routine drug testing results (
Education and Experience
(1) A Medical Degree (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) and an unrestricted licensed to practice in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Board Certified preferred in Occupational Medicine, Family Medicine, or Internal Medicine through American Board of Preventive Medicine (ABPM), American Board of Family Medicine (ABFM), or American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM).
(2) Minimum of five years as a practicing physician, strong preference given to candidates with experience in an occupational medicine or employee health setting.

• Ability to traverse across various locations on the laboratory site and access work areas
• Ability to lift up to 10 pounds frequently and 25 pounds occasionally • Ability to stoop, bend over and climb ladders • Ability to work on a computer for extended periods • Visual capabilities sufficient to use computer workstations, read documents, and see safety alarms • Auditory capabilities to hear safety alarms
