SALARY RANGE: $105,200 - $166,200 (SCS III)

The Jefferson Lab Scientific Computing Operations Group, part of the Jefferson Lab Computational Sciences and Technology (CST) division, is responsible for the support of scientific computing at the laboratory. We seek applicants for a Data Center Technology Specialist. The successful candidate will have primary responsibility for coordinating the planning, design, and operational integrity of data center capabilities in support of diverse communities including Experimental Nuclear Physics program, the Theory Center, and the Data Science department. This position involves an exciting opportunity to participate in the development of a new facility with a large user base.

Essential Job Functions: 

  • In coordination with laboratory staff and stakeholders, develop specifications for data center construction, upgrade, and operation to deliver best-in-class availability and end user experience.
  • Coordinate data center design, construction, and operations with Jefferson Lab staff, AE firms, and customers.
  • Participate in long-term planning for lab computing infrastructure that will frequently demand concurrent facility operation and upgrade.
  • Prioritize safety in system designs and demonstrate leadership in safe data center operation
  • Utilize trend and monitoring data from diverse sources to make real-time, automated adjustments to data center services and systems.
  • Research and recommend leading data center technologies that balance performance, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness.
  • Produce written documentation for diverse constituencies, including system administrators, lab management, peers, and professional organizations



Education and Experience:

a)    BS degree in computer science, Computer Engineering, or other relevant information technology field. MS preferred.

b)    Six years of experience with large data centers and state of the art data center technology

c)     Experience working in a dynamic research environment

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

a)    Expert knowledge in tiered data center design and operation, including mechanical systems, electrical systems, and controls.

b)    A broad architectural understanding of storage systems (disk and tape), compute clusters (HPC and HTC), and high performance networking systems. Knowledge of industry trends.

c)     Strong communication skills and ability to report on progress on tasks and projects

d)     Excellent interpersonal skills, ability to work on project teams 

e)    Excellent leadership and management skills

• Ability to understand, remember, and communicate highly technical information and make decisions
• Ability to understand complex problems and to collaborate, explore and implement alternative solutions
• Capable of analytic and deductive reasoning

• Ability to traverse across various locations on the laboratory site and access work areas
• Ability to work at a computer workstation for extended periods
• Visual capabilities to use computer workstations, read documents, and see safety alarms
• Auditory capabilities to hear safety alarms
• Ability to lift up to 10 pounds frequently and 25 pounds occasionally
• Ability to stoop, bend over and climb ladders
