SALARY RANGE: $123,800 - $195,600 (SSS) Jefferson Lab’s SRF Institute is responsible for guiding the evolution of the superconducting radio frequency (SRF) accelerator systems in CEBAF, developing and deploying new systems for US and international projects, and engaging vanguard research efforts to enable future generations of SRF-based accelerators.
The Senior SRF Accelerator Physicist will serve key roles in fulfilling these missions of the JLab SRF Strategy by providing leadership in analysis, standards development, system integration, and targeted basic and applied research. Applying advanced technical principles, theories and concepts, this person guides design and system integration efforts toward optimal performance of superconducting rf cavities in particle accelerators. Noted as a leader in scientific vision, this individual conducts and directs materials, process, and design research studies that expand the limits of the field, recommending various technology options or approaches for system, processes, facility, or program improvements in terms of safety, high gradient performance reliability, energy efficiency, or cost.
Essential Job Functions: Initiates and integrates high-impact research that is foundational to improved performance, cost, and reliability of SRF-based accelerator systems. Such research may be in the areas of:
Particulate contamination analysis and management in production and operational contexts Modified or new materials Bulk or surface material processing methods Basic superconducting materials properties Manages research and development projects in support of CEBAF and other DOE Office of Science missions within the Jefferson Lab Strategic Plan, including SRF systems for EIC and other large national and international efforts. Builds and maintains strategic collaborative partnerships in the US and international SRF accelerator community. Leads continuing education of JLab staff regarding the multidisciplinary basis and evolving standards for designs and methods used for optimally effective SRF-based accelerator systems. Supports workforce development by leveraging undergraduate and graduate student research projects as components of the above functions.
1 Education, Certifications and Experience:
a) Ph.D. in Physics or equivalent, with15 years of hands-on experience in SRF-based accelerator physics, at least three of which were in a project leadership capacity.
b) Extensive publications list.
2 Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
a) Advanced knowledge of SRF physics and related accelerator physics.
b) Advanced and demonstrated planning, budgeting, problem solving, decision making, analytical, communication, and presentation skills.
c) Developed leadership, managerial, interface, negotiation, and conflict resolution skills.
d) Ability to mentor graduate students and cross-disciplinary staff in new analytical techniques.
