HealthPartners is currently hiring for a Director - Research Methodology Group. This leadership position is housed within the HealthPartners Institute, an organization that is focused on improving health and well-being through research, education, and practice.

The Director - Research Methodology Group will be responsible for the following duties:

  • Supervise and mentor Research Methodology Group (RMG) investigators and the Manager of Statistical Services, including authority to hire, transfer, lay off, promote, discipline and discharge, train, reward, and review performance of employees. Conduct annual reviews and determine annual pay increases for RMG investigators and the Manager of Statistical Services.
  • Serve as the point of contact for assigning RMG investigators and staff to work on large scale research projects. Work with development team and Executive Director of Research to scope and budget methodological resources needed for new proposals and funded projects from Institute investigators.
  • Direct the ongoing development and maintenance of the HealthPartners Institute RMG. Direct the activities and hiring committees for Institute RMG hires, revise job descriptions, develop, and revise relevant operating procedures and work standards, and coordinate content for monthly RMG team meetings, identifying methods areas to develop in RMG colleagues. Support coordination and collaboration between RMG and others with quantitative expertise across the Institute, including members of the Research Informatics and Center for Evaluation and Survey Research (CESR) teams.
  • Collaborate closely with the Manager of Statistical Services to maintain coverage analysis for RMG Investigators and staff and communicate any coverages gaps or hiring needs to leadership. Meet monthly with the Institute Executive Director and Director of Research Administration to address operational and strategic barriers and directions and ongoing resource allocation planning for RMG.
  • Participate in the ongoing governance, administration, and research agenda of the HealthPartners Institute through service on Research Managers group, Research Management Council, Institute internal scientific review of research applications, and other committees and working groups as requested.
  • Develop working relationships with clinical leaders to understand their research methods needs and to develop strategies for meeting those needs. Collaborate with HealthPartners leaders and investigators to support the translation of research findings into practice and policy.
  • Promote external relationships for RMG, including partnerships with other research-focused health systems, academic institutions, and with federal funders.
  • Ensure compliance to organizational and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Provide leadership and expertise in quantitative research methodology, statistical analysis, and data interpretation over the life course of research projects, including research question and hypothesis development, study design, funding acquisition, project implementation, data analysis and peer reviewed publication.
  • Participate, co-lead, or lead proposal writing, including but not limited to the statistical analysis plan for federal grant applications.
  • Provide ad-hoc consultation on research methodology and statistical analysis for HealthPartners researchers and their collaborators.
  • Develop and maintain the necessary content, leadership, mentoring and administrative skills to independently direct the methodological and statistical functions of ongoing research programs.
  • Collaborate with Institute investigators on research that supports the organizational priorities of the Institute Divisions and Centers, HealthPartners Care Group, Dental Group, and health plan to improve health care and outcomes.
  • Contribute to research dissemination through publication of papers in scientific and professional journals, books, and electronic media, and presentations at professional meetings and other venues. First or senior author publications and presentations are encouraged.
  • Participate in continuous learning and provide service to the professional and scientific community through keeping current with relevant research, attendance/presentations at conferences, participation in scientific peer review groups, committees, working groups, and task forces.

Required Qualifications:

  • PhD in Biostatistics, Statistics, Epidemiology, Quantitative Psychology, Health Services Research, Bioinformatics, or other quantitative areas within one of the social sciences, medicine, or health care disciplines.
  • 7+ years postgraduate research experience, with established expertise in one or more areas of research methodology.
  • Experience conceptualizing, collaboratively developing, and writing the statistical methods section of large proposals for external funding for interventional or observational research.
  • Experience as a scientific mentor.
  • Advanced knowledge and applied experience with research design, statistical analysis and interpretation, and quantitative methods applicable to a range of studies, including clinical trials, pragmatic trials, and observational studies.
  • Experience with statistical software tools.
  • Ability to develop and sustain collaborative professional relationships with colleagues within and outside of HealthPartners.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team of co-investigators, project managers/coordinators, informatics programmers and/or software engineers, and other support staff to accomplish tasks in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Ability to write and communicate effectively for scientific and technical audiences and internal colleagues and a strong record of publication in peer reviewed journals.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in the management of research resources and delegation of staff to research projects.
  • Supervisory experience.
  • Biostatistical consulting expertise supporting health services and/or clinical research.
  • Recognized expertise in one or more areas of statistical analysis, demonstrated through first author publication.
  • Experience working with health care data sources including electronic health record and claims data.
  • Ability to conceptualize long-range strategic trends in approaches to health system-based research, to plan for staffing and training needs for RMG investigators and staff.
  • Knowledge of health care organization, practice, policy, and management.
