Denver Health, a nationally recognized Level I trauma center for the city of Denver and the entire Rocky Mountain region, is seeking a full-time medical physicist. This individual will be a highly skilled medical physicist who will be principally responsible for the inspection, testing, and maintenance of medical imaging equipment throughout the Denver Health enterprise. This person will play a central role in developing, planning, and implementing ongoing radiation safety training programs for Denver Health’s employee workforce. Denver Health’s medical physicist will also serve as chairperson for the institution’s Radiation Safety Committee. As chairperson, this individual will spearhead development of institution-wide policies and standards of practice for radiation management.


The Organization


Denver Health ( is an integrated, efficient, academic healthcare system that is considered a model for the nation. Denver Health’s Level 1 Trauma Center, in particular, is one of the world’s leading trauma centers and has one of the highest survival rates in the country. Denver Health is affiliated with the University of Colorado School of Medicine. All faculty at Denver Health have academic appointments, and some also deliver care at the University’s campus as well. Faculty have access to the academic and cultural resources of Denver Health and the University.


Position Summary

Under minimal supervision, Denver Health’s medical physicist will be responsible for ensuring that the institution meets state and federal requirements germane to the inspection, testing, (to include acceptance testing), and maintenance of medical imaging equipment throughout the Denver Health enterprise. Duties of this person will include, but are limited to, the following: conducting periodic medical physics evaluations on a broad range of imaging units in adherence to state and federal regulations; participating in surveys by various accrediting bodies to include Joint Commission and the American College of Radiology; performing quality control tasks on imaging equipment to ensure that correct and consistent results/outputs are achieved; overseeing Denver Health’s dosimetry program; and working closely with Denver Health’s provider and patient community to educate these groups on radiation safety. The medical physicist shall also serve as the chairperson of Denver Health’s Radiation Safety Committee, and will enforce all regulations as communicated by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission and the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE).


Reporting Structure

The medical physicist will report directly to the Director of Service of Denver Health’s Radiology Department.

Candidate Qualifications: 

Education:  Master’s degree in medical physics minimum, Ph.D. in medical physics is highly preferred.

Experience:  Preferred five years of progressive experience as a diagnostic and nuclear medical physicist in an acute care medical facility preferred, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:  A strong knowledge of medical physics and how this science is applied to a broad spectrum of imaging modalities. Excellent oral and written communication skills that lead to the effective transfer of knowledge to both healthcare professionals and laypersons. Demonstrated competencies in problem-solving techniques, analytics, and strategic thinking. Working knowledge of computers, electronic medical records, and radiology information systems. Fluency in the guidelines and requirements of various accrediting bodies.

Certificate/License/Registration:  Certified in diagnostic and nuclear medical physics by the American Board of Radiology.  CDPHE approved Registered Medical Physicist (RMP).   All Certifications and Licenses required for this job must be kept current as a condition of continued employment.
