    Arm DSG graduate programme 2020

    Arm is the world’s leading semiconductor IP company; our technologies reach 70% of the global population and our customers have shipped more than 130 billion Arm-based chips. 

    What do DSG do and how do we work?

    We are the group within Arm responsible for creating the tools people use to develop their Arm-based products, for example the compiler, debugger, performance profiler, optimised libraries and various models & emulators.

    Our customers, and their customers in turn, are building all kinds of products, from consoles to cars, door bells to data centres & super-computers to space-ships [1], and through your work on these tools you will have some exposure to a wide range of interesting problems and the opportunity to create novel solutions.

    We work with a variety of languages but most products eventually involve one or more of Java, C and C++, and many products are focussed on the lower levels of a system.

    We work in small to medium sized teams following modern Agile principles. Behind the scenes we use common tools like git, Gerrit & Jenkins for CI, Jira for issue tracking + various home made tools, all glued together with plenty of Python.

    Who and what are we looking for?

    First and foremost we are looking for enthusiastic & creative people with an interest in computers and an ability to write software.

    You may be about to earn a degree in computer science, software engineering or similar but we also welcome applications from other candidates with relevant experience; our teams include people who studied physics, electrical engineering, biology, psychology and more.

    You probably enjoy solving puzzles and have an enquiring mind. How does this work? Why does it work that way?

    A measure of diligence and thoroughness to keep the development process working smoothly and efficiently.

    The ability to focus on a task, and to clearly communicate your progress to colleagues.

     

    What does the graduate programme offer?

    All graduates will embark on a 2 year rotation programme consisting of a series of placements with the teams that develop each product. During that time you will have a single mentor to maintain some consistency, and structure.

    Placements are typically 3-6 months long and will be selected from a range of options available, by you and your mentor. Within each team you will be given real problems to work on that will make use of your existing knowledge and skills, whilst also requiring you to learn something new (be that a new language, an internal codebase or a new API). Plenty of support will be given by the local team. Past placements have included

    • "Optimising common maths routines" [2]
    • "Complex division improvements in GCC"

    • "Code coverage metrics for our system simulation models"
    • "Converting a trace of an application's graphic API calls (Vulkan, OpenGL ES) + hardware performance counters into actionable advice for game developers"
    • "Adding support for profiling Java applications to our profiling tool 'Streamline'" [3]
    • "Porting an RTOS to an Arm platform and adding OS awareness to the debugger" [4]

    You will participate in the different aspects of commercial and open source software development, from product design and implementation to testing and support.

    At the end of the rotation programme you will 'graduate' to one of the development teams.

    Location and travel

    This position is open in either the Cambridge or Manchester offices in the UK. Both offices are new with excellent facilities, and both cities are lively, popular places to live.

    You will have the opportunity to travel to other Arm offices, events and to meet with our customers and partners.
