The Separation Science group in the Chemical Sciences & Engineering division at Argonne National Laboratory has an opening for a Postdoctoral Appointee to conduct fundamental research centered on liquid surfaces/interfaces of relevance to separation science. As part of an ongoing program that integrates advanced techniques in surface physics with inorganic, analytical, and physical chemistries the successful candidate will contribute to the development of new capabilities in the area of surface applied optical and vibrational spectroscopies, including all aspects of data acquisition, interpretation, and presentation, both at scientific conferences and in peer-reviewed literature.

Ideally, we are seeking a candidate with considerable experience with optical and vibrational spectroscopy techniques, such as second harmonic generation (SHG) spectroscopy and sum frequency generation (SFG) spectroscopy. Considerable practical expertise and demonstrated applications of surface-sensitive measurements, including, tensiometry of liquid-vapor interfaces and Langmuir trough techniques. Considerable experience with surface functionalization and self-assembled monolayer preparation. Some knowledge of high-resolution synchrotron-based X-ray scattering and spectroscopy techniques (such as X-ray reflectivity, X-ray standing waves, and X-ray absorption spectroscopy) would be a plus. Some knowledge of liquid-liquid extraction, interfacial physics. Considerable knowledge of data analyses methods. Considerable skill in both written and oral communication. Considerable skill in working interactively and productively in a multidisciplinary environment. Good ability to work independently on a day-to-day basis. Doctorate and 0 to 3 years of work experience.
