Argonne National Laboratory seeks a postdoctoral researcher to join the Structural Biology Center (SBC) at the Advanced Photon Source (APS) to develop methods in crystallography and other techniques. Building on our expertise in high resolution de novo structure determination, serial crystallography and a long history of cutting edge experiments, we would like to bring the next generation of experiments to the SBC general user program. The postdoctoral fellow will develop hardware and software to analyze molecular changes of structures as diffraction data is collected and processed autonomously, will create the experimental scope, source samples, collect and analyze data.
The SBC is committed to research in these areas as the direction of the crystallography is being shifted and as APS will provide advanced capabilities after the major ongoing upgrade. Research in multimodal crystallography is growing and expected to continue to increase for years to come.
- The candidate should hold a Ph.D. or expect to graduate shortly.
- As future experiments will span across several fields of research, we expect the candidate to have broad interests and an excellent working knowledge of x-ray diffraction physics, computer science, experimental design and execution, and analysis. Some understanding of biology would be useful but is not required.
- The successful candidate will be trained in experimental synchrotron hardware, software, and current macromolecular crystallography techniques. The experiments will involve using multimodal techniques, handling data flows through to structural dynamics and will be expected to build on and improve upon each of these areas of research in support of the SBC user program.
- The candidate will work closely with the SBC team members who have expertise from diverse subjects with the ultimate goal of revealing biological processes using x-ray protein crystallography techniques at SBC.
- Commitment to learning, experience and expertise in and around Synchrotron Methods is key.
- A good publication record is expected.
