Argonne National Laboratory is inviting applications for the position of Associate Laboratory Director (ALD) for Photon Sciences (PSC) and the Director of the Advanced Photon Source. Located about 25 miles southwest of Chicago, Argonne is one of the preeminent multidisciplinary research facilities in the country and is operated by UChicago Argonne, LLC for the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE).
This position oversees the Advanced Photon Source (APS), one of DOE’s flagship user facilities and one of the top three high-energy light sources in the world. The APS is the backbone of Argonne‘s multi-disciplinary research program and a leader in innovation for accelerators, detectors and optics. The ALD will work closely with academia, industry and other government institutions to make recommendations for the facility’s scientific direction and available capabilities. The ALD will identify and respond to national and sponsor needs by maintaining and expanding Argonne’s science and technology programs, particularly the Advanced Photon Source Upgrade (APS-U) project.
The PSC ALD is an executive position that reports to the Laboratory Director and oversees an annual budget of about $160 million for operations and research programs in three divisions: X-ray Sciences, Accelerator Sciences and Engineering Support. The ALD drives the science portfolio for the APS-U project team to move forward plans for an $815-million upgrade of the facility to introduce a new cutting-edge multi-bend achromat lattice technology by about 2023. In partnership with the APS Upgrade Director, they will provide scientific leadership for the APS-U by developing strategic programs for the upgrade and collaborate to ensure their success. As a member of Argonne’s senior management team, the PSC ALD will play a crucial role in defining Laboratory strategies and goals and supporting their implementation, working with the Laboratory Director, Deputy Directors, and Argonne’s four other Associate Laboratory Directors.
The PSC ALD will be accountable for developing, managing and motivating a high-performing and diverse population of multi-disciplinary scientific, technical and professional teams and creating an environment consistent with the laboratory’s core values. The ALD will collaborate with their management teams, laboratory peers and human resources in the strategic incorporation of talent management and diversity, equity and inclusion programming in overall workforce planning. In addition, the PSC ALD is expected to enable and foster a proactive and integrated safety culture that promotes a sense of openness, transparency and urgency.
The successful applicant should have a strong international scientific reputation in one or more relevant scientific fields within PSC with experience in managing large interdisciplinary science programs in a creative and collegial environment. When commissioned, the APS Upgrade will be the most sophisticated storage ring light source ever built and will bring considerable complexity to its operations; therefore, familiarity with operation of accelerator systems and basic accelerator science and technology is beneficial. In addition, the individual should have demonstrated leadership skills, including in the following areas:
- Establishing and articulating scientific vision, identifying research opportunities and building collaborative partnerships with facility users, universities, industrial partners and other research and development institutions.
- Establishing effective interpersonal relationships with the highest level of internal and external contacts in a variety of government, academic, scientific and industrial institutions.
- Ability to build and sustain relationships with federal agencies that support research and development.
- Managing the ongoing business administration of a matrix organization at a senior level, overseeing complex technical facilities and infrastructural developments.
- Managing safe, secure, efficient facilities and operations in a large multidisciplinary environment.
