Argonne National Laboratory invites applications from highly qualified candidates for the position of Director of the High Energy Physics Division (HEP), one of five Divisions within Argonne’s Physical Sciences and Engineering Directorate. The spectrum of research in the Division covers all three frontiers of high energy physics: Energy, Intensity and Cosmic, including theoretical programs in particle physics and cosmology. The Division also manages cutting edge programs in sensor and detector development, advanced accelerator R&D, advanced computing applications, and maintains electronics and mechanical engineering support groups. The Division includes the Argonne Wakefield Accelerator (AWA) and a US-ATLAS Analysis Support Center. Strong inter-Divisional collaborations within Argonne are an important feature of HEP’s scientific activities; cross-cutting areas include materials and photon science, nuclear physics, and high performance computing. The Division is funded mainly through DOE’s Office of High Energy Physics.
The HEP Division Director will bear responsibility for the research programs in the Division including activities such as long-term planning, preparation of initiatives, establishment of policy and priorities, and interactions with the funding agencies and the broader academic and laboratory research communities. In addition, the Director will strive to maintain excellence and diversity in the HEP scientific and technical staff and work to foster and maintain high standards in environmental safety, health, quality assurance, and professional ethics for all of the Division’s activities.
