The Decision and Infrastructure Sciences (DIS) Division researches, designs, and delivers scientific tools and methodologies to inform decision-making regarding the most challenging security, risk, and resilience problems. DIS experts have developed methods to understand dependencies and iterdependencies within and across infrastructure systems, strengthen infrastructure security and resilience, and respond to emergencies. As a multidisciplinary national laboratory, Argonne offers an exciting atmosphere in which to collaborate on interdisciplinary projects that focus on complex technical problems and integrated application of natural, social, and computer science practices.  This position will be based out of our Lemont, IL office. 

To support our research mission, DIS is seeking an Geographic Information Systems (GIS) analyst to support our growing National Preparedness Analytics mission. 

In this position, you will:

  • Convert raw and unstructured data into useable GIS data (feature classes, shapefiles, tables, etc…)
  • Develop GIS maps and geospatial visualizations to support analyses and solution identification – both static map images as well as web based mapping applications.
  • Produce reports on geographic data utilizing different data visualization techniques
  • Develop geoprocessing models to address sponsor analytical needs and priorities.
  • Write scripts to automate data collection and analysis (knowledge of python or R preferred)
  • GIS Analysts will need to explain geographic trends and findings from their analyses to sponsors, requiring excellent written and verbal communication

The selected candidate will be placed at the appropriate level (PT1 or PT2) depending upon depth and breadth of relevant knowledge, skills, and experience brought to the position.  

To be considered you must have:

  • Bachelor’s degree in GIS, geography, urban planning, or a related field and
  • Experience with mapping tools such as ArcGIS suite of tools – ArcDesktop, ArcPro, ArcCatalog, AGOL and/or Portal and QGIS
  • Experience in applicable programming languages such as Python or Java Script
  • Experience in using Model Builder to create repeatable and unique geoprocessing tasks to be used in analysis
  • Strong project management practices and the ability to meet deadlines
  • Good communication skills including the ability to translate technical information into plain language
  • Knowledge of ArcGIS for Server or Server Administration a plus
  • Knowledge of ArcGIS Arcade is a plus. 

The selected candidates will have professional experience creating maps, geodatabases, and web applications. All candidates must pass a general background check for employment and may be required to obtain a “Q” clearance.
