Accountabilities and Specific Requirements:
WORK LOCATION:  Pipeline or Valdez

  • Valdez - Alaska residency is preferred. Individuals living away from Valdez are responsible to report to their work location on time, and to report if required for unscheduled overtime.  Each week will consist of 40 hours of regular pay and 44 hours of overtime pay.  Valdez living expenses (housing, food, etc.) are not reimbursed.  

SCHEDULE:  

  • This is a non-exempt position working a rotational schedule as follows:

    Valdez and North Pole: 7 days on/7 days off

    PS01: 14 days on/14 days off

    PS01 and Valdez position will rotate on day and night shifts.  The NPMS position will be primarily night shift (2 pm to 2 am) with occasional day shift work to provide project coverage.  Overtime will be required as well as the ability to travel.  This position is not eligible for relocation benefits.

TECHNICIAN PROGRESSION:

  • Technicians will participate in basic training that will provide an understanding of Alyeska’s technical systems and business processes and what it is like to be a technician on the Trans Alaskan Pipeline System (TAPS).  After basic training, individuals will be placed into their initial job assignments and begin the technician progression program.
  • Alyeska Pipeline has a formal progression program that enables technicians to advance in pay with experience. The progression program includes performance objectives and specific developmental goals, all within the established program timeline (which includes milestones and testing for completion).  A mentor will also be provided to help guide the individual through the program.

Under general direction of the Analytical Laboratories Supervisor, the Laboratory Technician provides Laboratory services at Valdez or Pipeline Labs.  The successful candidate must be willing to actively support Alyeska’s Code of Conduct, Rules and Regulations, and workplace expectations. Performs routine quality control testing as required by departmental standard laboratory procedures (SLPs) and sampling schedules.

  • Performs physical and chemical analyses on crude oil in accordance with published procedures based upon ASTM Methods and API Standards
  • Completes chemical and physical testing procedures on potable and non-potable waters, and other related media in accordance with regulatory requirements
  • Conducts routine and non-routine sampling and preservation of materials to comply with permits and regulatory requirements
  • Maintains documentation such as logbooks, work orders, preventative maintenance tasks, and calibration data to ensure compliance with written guidelines, policies, and procedures
  • Prepares and ships samples to contracted laboratories
  • Completes monthly Quality Bank sampling and maintains Quality Bank sampling equipment
  • Calibrates instruments, completes minor repairs, prepares standards, completes inventory, and orders laboratory supplies
  • Completes training as required for Technician Progression and Development
  • Communicates with Operations personnel to ensure that sampling and analytical methods meet the data quality objectives for the industrial process or project
  • Performs general laboratory housekeeping
  • Recommends changes that will improve business effectiveness
  • Demonstrates and promotes teamwork to ensure continuity and consistency in the laboratory.

MINIUMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  Applicant must meet or exceed these minimum job requirements to apply for this position.

  • HS Diploma or equivalent
  • 12 hours of college chemistry or three (3) years of technical work experience in any of the following disciplines: laboratory testing, metering, automated measurement systems, or environmental field work
  • Good communication skills - both verbal and written
  • Able to use computers and software including database and data transfer applications
  • Able to work independently and perform successfully in a team environment
  • Able to lift at least 35 pounds
  • Position may require the employee to lift 70 pounds on an intermittent basis
  • Valid driver’s license

PREFERENCES:

  • B. S. degree in chemistry or related science
  • Familiar with state and federal regulations and test methods published by EPA, ASTM, Standard Methods, and ADEC
  • Experience with troubleshooting and repairing general lab instruments
  • Trained in dangerous goods shipping requirements
  • Experience with administration and maintenance of LIMS software
  • Experience driving on unpaved roads and in adverse weather conditions
  • Experience with Alyeska work expectations, regulatory requirements, and procedures

Position Description:
This job is accountable for performing sample collection, analysis, and shipping for APSC operations.
