Position Description:

Quail Creek Surgical Hospital is partnered with BSA Health System to provide two surgical facilities which includes Panhandle Surgical Hospital in Amarillo. Each hospital combines the latest technology with a warm and caring staff specializing in surgical services. Physicians Surgical Hospitals is unique because it is owned and operated by physicians in an affiliation with BSA Health System.

Job Summary:
Under general direction, the Chart Analyst reviews medical records after discharge for completeness in compliance with hospital policies. Scans and indexes into document imaging system all charts each day. Assigns charts to the coders and enters deficiencies for physicians daily. Ensures charts are placed for physicians to resolve their deficiencies and picks completed charts up daily. Complete final scanning of charts when all documents and signatures are received. Assists with ROI requests and ensures all information is present prior to the release of records. Performs other duties associated with the operations of the medical record department.

Position Requirements:

RHIT or equivalent experience or CCS or equivalent experience
High school education
Associate Degree in HIT or equivalent experience
Must be familiar with ICD-9-CM and CPT coding principles as well as Medicare and Medicaid regulations regarding coding
Must be familiar with ICD-10-CM coding principles with training in ICD-10 completed or in progress
Requires two year’s experience in ICD-9-CM and CPT coding
Medicare coding experience preferred


Organizational and follow-through skills for general office
 Knowledge and ability to interpret and apply ICD-9-CM and CPT coding guidelines and general knowledge and use of Microsoft office
Ability to multi-task constantly and tolerate interruptions
Applies ICD-9-CM and CPT codes to claims from the medical records
Maintains 95% coding accuracy
Meets productivity standards
Abstracts or verifies the following information:
Base knowledge and understanding of ICD-10-CM
Position requires fluency in English language to function in job environment appropriately
Must exhibit desire to exemplify the PSH culture, including the BSA Mission, Vision and the BSA Way.
Good positive, customer focused interpersonal and business telephone skills
Strong communication skills
Keyboard data entry skills and working knowledge of computers and basic office equipment
Intermediate level of experience with computers in Windows and Microsoft Office applications
Strong grasp of medical terminology
Must be able to work in a fast paced environment and adapt to rapidly changing situations
Must be able to quickly evaluate and prioritize requests of staff and physicians
Must be well versed in HIPAA laws and keep patient documentation and information confidential such as:
Admission date, Discharge date, Disposition, Discharge service, Attending physician, Consulting physician, Patient type, ICD-9-CM and CPT codes, ICD-10-CM and CPT codes-dual coding for implementation of ICD-10 and thereafter
Demonstrates an understanding of the medical-legal implications and responsibilities related to coding of the patient records to protect the patient and the business/institution
