Position Information
The senior medical interpreter/translator provides language interpretation services between patients/families and the hospital's care providers.   This position also provides translation of documentation for medical and legal purposes at professional level.  This position adheres to WakeMed's adopted* Standards of Practice for Medical Interpreters, Role of Medical Interpreters, and Code of Ethics for Medical Interpreters, as well as departmental and administrative policies.

Bachelors degree [in Spanish or a related behavioral science or health care field preferred] and two years of education/translation experience, or associates degree in a related field and five years of experience as a full-time medical interpreter/translator in a clinical/hospital setting required.

A. 1) Must have a high level of linguistic proficiency in Spanish, English, and at least one other foreign language, as identified by need by management, in terms of breadth and depth of language, with the understanding of the vernacular in Spanish and the second foreign language; AND/OR 2) Must have a high level of linguistic proficiency in Spanish and English, in terms of breadth and depth of language, with the understanding of the vernacular in Spanish; AND must be able to translate, from English into Spanish and Spanish into English, at a professional level [high level of grammatical sentence structure, and ability to follow all language rules, in both languages, while at the same time keeping a level of readability appropriate for the target audience; and very little editing required]. B. Must have sound knowledge of medical, technical and legal terminology in both English and the foreign languages assigned. Must have thorough knowledge of cultural and social differences in the communities served. Must pass written and oral assessment/evaluation of language, interpretation and/or translation skills in all working languages required. C. Must have the ability to maintain the linguistic register and style of the speakers; a high level of retention of information to provide accurate/exact interpretation; knowledge of cultural appropriate behavior/recognition of intercultural issues, and must adhere to WakeMed s Standards of Practice and Code of Ethics for Medical Interpreters. D. Must have knowledge of and ability to consistently practice interpersonal skills, collaboration skills, and ability to listen. E. Able to use MS Office software, including ACCESS database.
