Posting Description

POSTDOCTORAL ASSOCIATE, Mechanical Engineering - Prof. Rohit Karnik, to work on developing advanced composite membranes based on nanoporous graphene for a 3-year industry-sponsored multi-PI project on ion-selective electrodialysis for wastewater treatment titled, “Advanced Anion Exchange Membranes for Selective Ion Removal and Valorization by Electrodialysis”. Will have access to state-of-the-art research facilities at MIT, including MIT.nano, and will work collaboratively in a multi-disciplinary team involving the laboratories of Prof. Zachary Smith and Prof. Timothy Swager. Particularly, the candidate will be expected to work closely with a chemistry counterpart in the Swager laboratory.

Job Requirements

REQUIRED: PhD in Chemical Engineering, Civil and Environmental Engineering, Materials Science & Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field, with a focus on membranes and ideally covering water treatment and electrodialysis; proven experience in conducting high-quality research in membranes and membrane materials, especially graphene or other two-dimensional membranes; understanding of membrane fabrication techniques, materials chemistry, or sufficient background to quickly learn the topics; familiarity with analytical techniques such as chromatography and mass spectroscopy; expertise in electrodialysis, nanomaterial-based membrane design and fabrication, measurement of mass transport across membranes, analytical methods for characterization of solutes, and materials characterization techniques; excellent problem-solving skills, creativity, and a demonstrated ability to perform high-quality research, along with excellent oral and written professional communication skills. PREFERRED: Experience with membranes made of nanoporous graphene or other two-dimensional materials.
